The popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft has, for years now, been a source of fascination for me. I have never been able to quite put my finger on why, but something about the game – the escapism it offers, themanship, theraw emotion – has always pulled me in.
Interestingly, my love for the game did not begin when World of Warcraft originally released in 2004. In fact, I did not even start playing the game until Wrath of the Lich King came out in 2008. No, my love affair with Warcraft started much later than that…
It was the summer of 2013. At the time, I was fresh out of college and working as a journalist in my hometown of Seattle, WA. I had just started dating a wonderful woman named Rebecca, and life was good.

He had been diagnosed with cancer a few months prior, and the doctors said that he only had a few months to live. As you can imagine, this hit me hard.
My grandfather was not just my guardian, he was my best friend. We would spend hours talking about everything under the sun, from politics to sports to philosophy. He was the one person in my life who really understood me, and I could not imagine losing him.
As his health began to rapidly decline, my grandfather made me promise him one thing: that I would never forget him, and that I would never stop playing World of Warcraft.
It was a strange request, but I agreed.
A few weeks after my grandfather passed away, I logged into World of Warcraft for the first time in months. I did not know what to expect, but I knew that I had to honor my grandfather's last wish.
As I began to play, I quickly realized that something was different. I could feel my grandfather's presence in the game. It was as if he was guiding me, helping me make the right choices.
I started to play the game more and more, and before long, I was completely hooked. I would spend hours upon hours farming rare items and crafting powerful gear. I even started a blog to document my progress.
But
